Strange Fate is the first collection of songs by our good friend and Folk Blues Night favorite Nick Ciolino. Nick lives a double life, half here in Hamtramck havin' a good ol' time with us yahoos here at the shop, and the other half off the Alaskan coast aboard the Lucky Star fishing vessel where much these songs were inspired and honed over various seasons at sea. Some of the selections on this tape were recorded live during our famed Folk Blues Night parties, while others were captured after hours here at LO & BEHOLD! Records & Books as he and I passed a bottle of good burbon and various beers. Cheers to a good listen!

It's almost impossible to capture, that energy and youthful gaiety we get to experience here whenever Phil hosts one of his kid's shows—the real "magic" felt while transcending time, space, age, et cetera and finding yourself somewhere else in some other time without ever leaving where you began—but the live shows were impossible to capture on tape, the stationary mics couldn't keep up with Phil and the kids bouncing around the room. So instead Phil came by the shop one night with an array of fruits and tea biscuits—I boiled up some herbal tea (herbs and flowers in the bottom of a cup) and turned the mic on while Phil did a condensed version of his Stories and Songs hour for children. So nutty, and such a good time.

I recorded Nine Songs with my good friend Richie Wolfeil at his shop Lo and Behold Records and Books on Jos Campau in Hamtramck, MI.  We recorded the whole thing in one evening in his dimly lit little shop that was cold because the heater was too loud to run.  The shop had become a local clubhouse for my friends and me with Richie as a sort of “live-in” instigator.  I was fresh off the road from five months of touring and wanted to lay down the songs I had collected throughout the winter.  Songs of heartbreak and of being stuck somewhere far away from home.  Feelings and scars I’d collected the previous year, rising to sight in these scenes.  We captured these songs that evening, rarely pausing even for a second take.  I hope you enjoy being in that room with us.

DANNY & THE DARLEANS is a real garage/rock 'n' roll band comprised of Danny Kroha (Gories/Demolition Doll Rods), Colleen Burke (We Ragazzi/Outrageous Cherry), and Richie Wohlfeil (the crazy behind this shop/label). Released in late 2013 on LP via Nero's Neptune, this record has become a punk-house party favorite over the last couple years. Released as L&B Cassette #3

The STARK WEATHER STRING BAND is the first tape released by FOLK BLUES NIGHT that wasn't recorded live at the shop. This tape was a direct to hand-held cassette recording of the group in their basement practice space shortly before half the group departed for Morgantown, WV. The group never got to make it to one of our monthly folk events, but Drew was kind enough to mail us this tape shortly after the move. I liked the sound of it and commenced to dub. Each tape features some neighborhood pine/yew.

SEVEN BLACK SHAPES by THE POTIONS has finally landed. A record years in the making (as the band has been around since the early 2000's and hasn't really released anything) and whenever a recording was attempted, some great disaster or destruction prevented the effort from any realization. Even this session saw a disaster, but through some great miracle a "workable" version was saved and worked. So hear (sic) you go. A living example of Detroit marsh music, pulled from some sludge filled river nearby. Released as L&B Cassette #4

LOCATIONS No.4 by Wohlfeil/Pierce was recorded live during an art exhibition at Cincinnati's wonderful underground art space/gallery: LOHIOH. The show was curated by Richie Wohlfeil and presented by artist/craftswoman Alex Jameson. The LOCATIONS series features music improvised and recorded live "on location," direct to 2 track, with only cutting afterwards, no overdubs—the music is inspired by the energy of the space it occurs in, and dictated by the various instruments available at that time.

LOCATIONS No.3 by Wohlfeil/Pierce was recorded in the back room of Adam's home in Oak Park, Mich. over the course of breakfast, a few bloody marys and a moscow mule. The LOCATIONS series features music improvised and recorded live "on location," direct to 2 track, with only cutting afterwards, no overdubs—the music is inspired by the energy of the space it occurs in, and dictated by the various instruments available at that time.

FOLK BLUES NIGHT No. 8, titled Afternoon in June, is just what the title says.We didn't have our monthy party in June of 2013 but a few of the boys were in town during the afternoon of what would have been Folk Blues Night. So during shop hours, they swung by and asked if they could just "jam" in the shop for a while. We recorded the jam, and it's presented here in two 23 minute tracks. Todd, Rollie, Westin, and Dooley just sittin' around the couch here at L&B.

FOLK BLUES NIGHT No. 7 is our 7th relase in our FBN series, and this, by virtue of its very number has become the gospel edition in our humble series. It's a various artists compilation, all recorded live here at L&B, most of which outside in the empty lot next door. Yea, buddy!

FOR THE BIRDS by Remnose was recorded with only two microphones on the sales floor of LO & BEHOLD! Records & Books during a cold February night, after store hours. Two guitars, bass, and voice—no drums. The overall vibe here recalls Tim Buckley's Blue Afternoon (Vincent's leads recollect Lee Underwood's) with grunge-style vocals. An underground Michigan classic.

TODD ALBRIGHT, like a salmon swimming up-stream, he's come from some Toledo reservoir into and across Lake Erie, up past the factories and plants and sludge and slime along the Detroit River to take to shore and settle a new home in South West Detroit. After burning the sludge off himself with a pot of hot coffee from Duly's Coney Island, he cracked his Piedmont fingers, lit a cigarette, then ventured into our little bookstore to cut this most-genius little tape for our series.

DAVE MORRISON, the 6th release in the FBN series seems to capture the "wild man" as the folks who know him close actually know him — a sweet and humble soul, cut from the laughing cloth of Buddah thrown over a puddle for the walking lady. This tape is a rare FBN exception to the rule, not recorded during our party, but after hours with a bottle of rum in a magical night at the shop, exploring the songs that started Dave on his path.

Installment No. 5 in the Folk Blues Night series, this one is another various artists comp. featuring all yr faves, but there's a whole lotta Rollie on this one — it's a burner. If this, No. 5, were a perfume, it would smell like sawdust and burnt straw mingled with last night's campfire . . . but remember this was recorded in Hamtramck, you'll soon forget the country when that Oldsmobile from the 80's drives by, smelling like a dirtbike and humming like an out-board motor.

(various artists) No. 4 in the Folk Blues Night series recorded live at LO & BEHOLD! this one features some of yr favorites like Danny Kroha and Dave Morrison, Todd Albright and Dooley Wilson, with the addition of young Brian Konicek and the great Rollie Tussing. Upping the ante with each release in this series is what we hope to do, and man, this one's a sure bet.

Recorded at an art gallery within the museum at Michigan's famed Cranbrook Academy of Art, this more abrasive set by W/P stands as a strong follow-up to the first.

A considerably cruder version of No. 1, this (various artists) comp. is fraught with more loose ends, crowd chaos, and all-out drunken hilarity, for this one is made to represent the cruder side of our little but eventful monthly we refer to as Folk Blues Night. This one features many of the folks found on No.1 with the addition of Phil Leslie, Michael Hurtt, and Behind the Times.
